The Sleep Deprived Capital of the UK is Aberdeen

For any country or region, there will be a place that will solicit the tag of being the “Sleep Deprived Capital”. And as far as the United Kingdom is concerned, the unlikely tag is pointing to Aberdeen after a survey was conducted. According to the collected information, people over there slept just 5 hours and 23 minutes a night.

People in the UK at an average enjoy six hours and seven minutes, which is far lesser than the recommended eight hours of sleep every night. And like most of us, the main cause were identified as money problems, inappropriate environment at work, troubles in family, and relationship issues.

Sleep Bruxism Linked to Stress

Have you experienced some teeth-grinding episodes when you are asleep? Well if you are and are wondering why this is happening, you may be working too hard or are stressed out. Also known as Sleep Bruxism, this has found to be common and yet unresolved. However new studies may yet link it and provide us with a better understanding of why this occurs.

“Its causes are still relatively unknown, but stress has been implicated. We aimed to investigate whether different stress-factors, and different coping strategies, were more or less associated with these bruxism symptoms.”

The study was made by Dr Maria Giraki, from Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf, Germany who studied 69 people, 48 of whom were tagged as “bruxers”.

Anti-Snoring Device – Snoring Jaw Supporter Review!

snoring-jaw-supporter

For those of you who’s spouse or yourself snores so loud that you or your partner cannot sleep at night, it’s time for some serious change, the anti-snore device MySnoringSolution may be just what you need.

There are many snoring solutions out there but this one might be the best solution for those of you who don’t want a surgery nor chemicals sprayed into your mouth.

Here’s how it work, the snoring jaw suppoter basically keeps your lower jaw from opening and increases the airway, thereby eliminating snoring:

How it works – Snoring research has shown that a jaw supporter, keeping the lower jaw in an upward position increases the three dimensional space in the airway, reduces air velocity and soft tissue vibration. This action can eliminate or substantially reduce snoring.

A jaw supporter is based on the same principle as CPR. The airway must be open to allow air to pass through the throat. A constricted or collapsed airway causes snoring and/or OSA. A jaw supporter can hold the lower jaw in a position so that it does not fall backwards/down during the night and cause the airway to collapse. Maintaining a clear airway improves breathing and reduces snoring.

I have heard from some of my friends that this has worked wonders so I think this snoring jaw supporter could be the best anti-snoring device out there.

You can get it here for $89.97. It is not cheap by any means but if this anti-snore device fixes your snoring habits for good, it could pay for itself and a whole lot more restful sleep for your loved ones.

Ecotones Duet Sleep Sound Machines Purchased by Stanford University Medical Center

Patients who seek some help with their sleep problems over at the Stanford University Medical Center can now look forward to better diagnostics and recovery after the latter purchased ASTI’s Ecotones Duet Sleep Sound Machines. The Ecotones Duet units are now available to patients during their hospital stay without charge, through the Guest Services Concierge Program.

This machine makes use of a built-in microphone that continuously “listens” to its surroundings for intrusive background noises. In response to unwanted noise, Ecotones Duet dynamically re-mixes its audio playback with complementary natural sounds and automatically adjusts volume to neutralize the offending noise. When intrusive noises subside, Ecotones Duet gradually and automatically returns to normal playback settings.

Sleep Better by Dieting

It seems that sleepless nights may be tied up with how much you weigh and eat and this issue will be tackled at this year’s National Sleep Awareness Week to be held from March 7 to 13. Health benefits will be among the topics which include proper rest and surprisingly, weight control.

There are two appetite-controlling hormones which contribute to the loss of sleep. Not only are you hungry in one sleep study, the participants’ desire for high-calorie, carbohydrate-dense foods rose 45% after inadequate sleep. Another study indicates that those who sleep less than eight hours a night have a higher level of body fat.

Hence if you want to battle the bulge and sleep better, this is one event you should not miss!

Sleep Longer and Be Closer to Diabetes

While sleeping has to be the favorite and simple pastime anyone can think off, it looks like you may also have to watch how long and how much you sleep. While sleeping is healthy, oversleeping can become a health hazard, putting you closer to that dreaded diabetes illness everyone is trying to avoid.

A study was conducted on 20,000 Chinese adults where napped for at least 4 to 6 days of a week had a higher prevalence of diabetes type 2. However, the researchers stress that their findings do not prove that napping itself is the culprit.

Men and women who napped four to six days per week were 36 percent more likely than those who never napped to have diabetes. Similarly, daily nappers had a 28 percent higher risk
